Leonard met Carroll Johnson when they collaborated on a review of energy utilization in the tire manufacturing industry at Texas A&M in the 1970s. Both moved from A&M but the friendship has endured. Carroll was on the faculty at U T El Paso until his semi-retirement in 2000 when he and Janie moved to their country place near Brownwood, Texas.
